What happened

A stampede broke out at the exit of a Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata, West Bengal, on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Reports vary on the toll: Kolkata police and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari cited at least 17 dead and 25 injured, while other outlets reported 18 or 19 dead. The most recent figure in the sources is at least 19 dead, with the chief minister saying 17 died first and two more later.

Police said the incident occurred at about 7:40 pm at the exit gate of the Chorbagan Sarvajanin pandal, within the Girish Park police station area. Officials said the stampede followed heavy rainfall, which drove large numbers of visitors into the pavilion. Police described a crowd of pandal hoppers pushing and rushing forward, and an announcement that caused commotion, as the trigger, according to a senior police official quoted by AFP.

Scale of casualties

The chief minister said that 24 injured people were out of danger and one was in a more serious condition. Eight of the injured were reported to be in critical condition in an earlier Spanish-language account. Police said the identities of the dead and injured were still being established, and many were believed to have travelled from districts outside Kolkata to see the festival.

Survivors and witnesses

A local resident told PTI that the stampede occurred as people left the pandal and that no volunteers were present. A victim quoted by a local outlet said the space was very narrow, that there was no lighting, and that no police or volunteers were at the site for about half an hour after the incident. Witnesses also described people losing consciousness in the crush and others being carried out on motorcycles.

Official response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X that he was saddened and offered condolences. The Prime Minister's office announced compensation of 200,000 rupees for the families of each person who died and 50,000 rupees for each injured person. Adhikari said his government would investigate whether the crowd was properly controlled and that responsibility would be fixed. He also said the state had cancelled its scheduled programmes and that a visit by Home Minister Amit Shah had been called off. Police detained twelve people, including organisers, volunteers and security staff, for questioning, according to a Dutch report.

We will investigate whether the crowd was being controlled properly. We will fix responsibility.
