Tech giants adopt federal renaming order

Apple updated its Maps application on September 1, 2026, to label Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for users inside the United States. The adjustment follows a similar rollout by Google Maps late on Saturday, August 29. Both platforms implemented the change after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 27 directing the Department of the Interior to rename the body of water in the official U.S. Geographic Names Information System within 30 days. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that Trump contacted Apple directly to request the modification.

Under the current display rules, U.S. users see the name "Lake America" across Apple and Google interfaces. Outside the United States, Apple Maps retains "Lake Ontario", while Google Maps shows both names to international audiences and "Lake Ontario" to users in Canada.

Canadian leaders push back

Canadian officials rejected the unilateral name change and defended the historical naming of the lake, which sits between the province of Ontario and New York state. Ontario Premier Doug Ford installed a physical sign near the water reading "Lake Ontario. Now and Always" and condemned the U.S. directive on social media.

It's Lake Ontario to Canadians and the rest of the world. Now and forever.

— Doug Ford

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the measure by noting that the name originates from the Huron Indigenous word "oniatarí:io", meaning "lake of shining waters", which predates both the U.S. Declaration of Independence and Canadian Confederation. Four of the five Great Lakes (Ontario, Huron, Michigan, and Erie) carry Indigenous names, while Lake Superior derives from French. New York's governor also stated that state authorities would not adopt the revised designation.

Tariff dispute and public reaction

The cartographic dispute developed directly after bilateral trade negotiations between the two nations collapsed in late July. Following the breakdown, Washington imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods valued at $20 billion, prompting Ottawa to retaliate with dollar-for-dollar duties on U.S. imports. Explaining Canada's stance during the trade standoff, Prime Minister Carney addressed the U.S. administration.

They ask for a lot and offer little. We cannot accept what they offered and we will not give what they asked for.

— Mark Carney

The trade conflict and renaming move face domestic resistance in the United States. According to a survey conducted by Reuters and Ipsos, 63% of Americans oppose changing the lake's name to Lake America, with significant pushback recorded among Republican voters. Additionally, about 60% of respondents in the same poll oppose the ongoing trade war against Canada.

MapQuest defies order as downloads climb

While Google and Apple conformed to the executive order, competitor MapQuest publicly refused to alter its maps, posting "We will not change it" on social media. MapQuest Chief Executive Officer Doug Berger explained that the company chose to retain the geographical names familiar to users, matching its earlier decision when the Trump administration ordered the Gulf of Mexico renamed the Gulf of America in February 2025.

Following its refusal, MapQuest climbed to the top spot in the Navigation category on the U.S. App Store and became the most downloaded free app in Canada's App Store. The surge in downloads reflects consumer reaction against the policy compliance of larger tech platforms.
