A controlled win on the counterattack

Sporting won 2-0 at Lens on Tuesday, 13 October, in the second matchday of the Champions League league phase. The visitors had beaten Galatasaray 3-1 at home in their opener, and the win leaves them provisionally top of the table with six points. Lens had won 3-2 at Slavia Prague in the first round but are irregular in Ligue 1, with only two wins from six rounds. The hosts controlled much of the play yet were inefficient in front of goal despite a series of chances. Sporting relied on quick breaks, and their shape was built around that plan.

Suárez and Doumbia find the net

Luis Suárez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. João Simões carried the ball through the middle, and Irankunda's cross reached Suárez at the near post, where he got the final touch. The goal was Suárez's seventh in the Champions League in 12 matches for Sporting, which SAPO reports as a club record ahead of Liedson, Gyokeres and Francisco Trincão. A shot from Lens forward Ivanovic struck the post before the interval, and about ten minutes later Lens goalkeeper Risser prevented Suárez from scoring again.

Goals in Sporting's 2-0 win at Lens
  1. Luis Suárez opens the scoring after a counterattack
  2. Issa Doumbia doubles the lead

Issa Doumbia doubled the lead in the 74th minute after Jesse Derry and Silas Andersen, both introduced from the bench, combined to release him. He finished one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and it was his first goal for Sporting. Lens had pushed forward in search of an equaliser when the second goal came.

Kaique's debut and Sporting's shape

Borges made several changes for the trip to France. Kaique, a 23-year-old goalkeeper recruited from Palmeiras, made his debut for Sporting and in the Champions League. Sergi Altimira dropped between the centre-backs to mark the Lens centre-forward, which pushed Geny Catamo higher as a winger. Doumbia was given a freer role as a midfielder, with João Simões alongside Altimira. PÚBLICO described the approach as trading positional play for speed and verticality, a style that created chances but also wasted many of them.

Borges reacts

After the match Rui Borges praised his players and the way they handled the first phase of the game against a competitive opponent. He said his side had been strong on the counterattack and had kept calm in possession.

Clearly we knew we would face a very intense and competitive team, and we were very strong on the counterattacks.

— Rui Borges

Borges added that the team had shown the focus, rigour, ambition and humility he had asked for before the game. He also said the side could have created more danger in transition and had missed some passes that are not usually lost.

Records and what comes next

Borges, 45, is in his third season at Alvalade, and the win gave him eight Champions League victories. That equals the total of Ruben Amorim, who coached Sporting from 2020 to 2024, making the two the coaches with the most wins in the competition for the club, according to SAPO. Lens next play at Bruges on 21 October, when they will try to recover from the defeat. Sporting host LASK Linz at the José Alvalade stadium on the same day, with kick-off at 20:00.
