A goalkeeping error and a second-half collapse
Inter's second-half problems centred on the goalkeeper and the defence. Josep Martinez came far off his line, and Carlos Forbs got the ball past him, leaving Tresoldi to tap into an empty net in the 63rd minute. Reuters described the goal as the result of a misunderstanding between Martinez and his defenders. Italian media suggested that Martinez's place in goal could now be at risk, and that Provedel, who is waiting on the bench, should get his chance. Fans on X also called for a change in goal, with several demanding that Provedel start immediately.
Chivu and Leko react
Cristian Chivu took responsibility after the match, saying frustration had cost Inter their rhythm once Brugge moved 2-1 ahead. He said the team had lost intensity, pushed forward without winning second balls and got its distances wrong, so the defence was always arriving late. Chivu added that the two defeats in the competition hurt because of the expectations around the club.
I am the first person responsible and we will have to change something.
Brugge coach Ivan Leko said he was happy with the result. He acknowledged that some people saw his side's approach as naive and risky, but said he had trusted his instinct, and he called the win a great moment for Belgian football.
Tresoldi's international future
Tresoldi, who is 22 according to Blick, has been a Milan supporter since childhood, which made the night at San Siro special for him, and he was named man of the match. He plays for Germany's U21 side, but Italy is his father's country, and Gazzetta dello Sport wrote that his choice between the two nations is currently 50:50. Both Jürgen Klopp and Roberto Mancini have already made contact with him. Tresoldi said he wants to finish with the German U21 side and play the European Championship next summer before deciding, and that he now has more confidence in his own abilities.
Swiss players on the bench
Three Swiss players were involved on the Brugge side. Yann Sommer started in goal, while Andrej Vasovic (18) and Cheveyo Tsawa (19) watched the win from the bench. Tsawa said he had never experienced anything like it and that nights like this one would probably never be forgotten. Inter's next Champions League fixture is against Shakhtar, though the reports gave no date.
