A head-on crash that became a probe
A head-on collision on the ring road of Cassano Magnago, in the province of Varese in northern Italy, killed a 69-year-old woman on Friday, 16 October 2026. The other driver was her former partner, a 73-year-old man. Early accounts pointed to a sudden medical episode at the wheel as the cause, but the position of the two cars afterwards led investigators to question that explanation. The woman died at the scene, and firefighters used an aerial ladder to free her from the crumpled metal. By 17 October, the case was being examined as a possible femicide, a line of inquiry pushed by the victim's relatives.
What the scene showed
Open reports that the alarm was raised shortly after 9:20 a.m., and that firefighters, 118 rescuers, an ambulance and a helicopter all reached the site. Police technical checks, led by local police commander Raffaele Esposito, continued into the evening of 16 October. According to Open, the woman was properly inside her own lane when the impact happened. Il Fatto Quotidiano, citing the police reconstruction, adds that the other car had crossed into the opposite carriageway and that her car had no time to avoid it. Investigators have seized the phones of both drivers.
- The former couple's relationship ends, according to sources
- Alarm raised; firefighters and 118 rescuers reach the crash on the ring road
- Police technical checks continue; prosecutors request further checks
- Autopsy could be carried out between 20 and 21 October
The investigation
The 73-year-old is under investigation for road homicide, the classification police have given the case so far. He was taken to Varese hospital with injuries to his limbs and is conscious, but he has not yet given his account of events, and he remains under guard there while prosecutors complete the file against him. The Busto Arsizio prosecutor's office, coordinated by prosecutor Massimo De Filippo, had asked police for further checks on the evening of 16 October. An autopsy is to be arranged in the coming hours and could take place between 20 and 21 October, and the vehicles will also undergo technical examination.
The family's account
The victim's relatives filed a complaint asking police to test whether the impact was accidental, and they told investigators the man had been pursuing her for some time. Open describes the relationship as turbulent and reports that the relatives said he had repeatedly harassed her. One of the victim's sons told Tg3 that she had been waited for and followed, and said he had videos that showed it. Sources differ on how long the couple were together: ANSA says several years, while other outlets say several months, but all place the end of the relationship in June 2026. The initial medical-episode explanation has not been confirmed, and the autopsy results are expected to add the next key evidence.
