Draw at Elland Road
Manchester United could only draw 1-1 at Leeds United on Sunday, 18 October, in a Premier League derby at Elland Road. Michael Carrick's side have now gone six games in all competitions without a win, the first run of that length since the end of the 2018-19 season. Their last league victory came on 30 August, a 5-2 win over Ipswich. The point leaves United 13th with seven points from seven matches, while Leeds, unbeaten at home since March, are seventh on 10 points. The result does little to ease pressure on Carrick, whose team sits two points above Nottingham Forest, the first side in the relegation places.
Goals and chances
Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead around the 35th minute, beating James Justin and finishing a low cross from Youri Tielemans. Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled in the 51st minute, beating Mbeumo to a loose ball after Tarik Muharemovic first met a corner. Senne Lammens made a full-stretch save to deny Nico Elvedi in the first half. Bruno Fernandes sent a long-range effort close in the 65th minute, while Amad Diallo's chance in the 76th minute was blocked by a Leeds defender. Neither side found a winner.

Martinez and the week at Old Trafford
Lisandro Martinez criticised the club's hierarchy after United lost 2-0 at Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, 13 October. He later apologised, and he was fined for his remarks. Observador, citing the English press, reported that the fallout led to a lockdown-style restriction at Carrington on social events for players and their partners. Observador also said Martinez named football director Jason Wilcox in his criticism, and that Atlético had scored after 53 seconds in Madrid. Martinez said he had spoken with anger and frustration, but he did not withdraw his criticism. He started against Leeds, was cheered by United supporters and booed by Leeds fans.
Elsewhere in the table
Brighton & Hove Albion beat Crystal Palace 5-0, with Jaydee Canvot putting the ball into his own net before Diego Gómez, Yasin Ayari, Charalampos Kostoulas and Jack Hinshelwood scored. Bart Verbruggen kept goal for Brighton, and Mats Wieffer remained out injured. Brighton have scored 15 times and conceded none in their last four league matches. The win lifts them to a provisional second place after seven games. Arsenal, who have played one game fewer, meet Nottingham Forest at 17:30 on 18 October and could move above them. Arsenal's result will determine whether Brighton stay second.
