Death confirmed in Brownsville
RJ Mitte died on Monday, 12 October 2026, in Brownsville, Texas, at the age of 34. A statement issued through his talent management company announced the death and called it a tragedy. A spokesperson later acknowledged reports that the death was a suicide, and no further details about the circumstances have been made public. Tributes followed within hours, led by Bryan Cranston, who played his on-screen father, and Vince Gilligan, the creator of the series.
Career and advocacy
Mitte was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and sustained a brain injury at birth. He was adopted as an infant and diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three. At 14 he was cast as Walter White Jr., known as Flynn, the son of a chemistry teacher who turns to methamphetamine production in AMC's Breaking Bad. The series ran for five seasons from 2008 to 2013 and became one of television's most celebrated dramas.

Outside acting, he served as a spokesperson for actors with disabilities at the Screen Actors Guild and was a celebrity ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy. Cranston's tribute also described him as the head of a philanthropic group supporting people with disabilities. In a 2021 interview with Courageous Nerd, Mitte described Cranston, Anna Gunn, Betsy Brandt and Dean Norris as parental and family figures on screen and off.
Tributes from the cast
Cranston posted a tribute on social media alongside a photograph of himself and Mitte smiling, apparently from the show's early days. He wrote that he was in deep despair.
I'm in deep despair
He closed the message with a farewell to the younger actor.
I'll miss you, son
Cranston wrote that the two had exchanged messages only weeks earlier about meeting for lunch, and that he did not know whether that lunch would have changed Mitte's future. He said it was especially devastating to learn that Mitte had taken his own life, and asked why. Luis Moncada, who played cartel enforcer Marco Salamanca, reposted a video of himself riding with Mitte at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta on 4 October, along with photographs from years of friendship. Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman, told The Hollywood Reporter that he was devastated.
Recognition and support
The Independent noted that Breaking Bad had recently been named the best television show of the century by The New York Times. Coverage of Mitte's work described his character as a steady moral compass across the show's five seasons. Cranston urged anyone thinking about suicide to contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the United States, saying there is hope.
