A listing that came before any farewell
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has placed Gaël Monfils on its list of retired players, with the status dated 5 October 2026. The 40-year-old former world No. 6 is therefore barred from entering tournaments. The agency confirmed the listing on Wednesday, 14 October, after the news surfaced in the press on Tuesday, 13 October. Italian broadcaster Rai reports that the player had not publicly announced a retirement, so the list entry came before any statement from him. The ITIA said it did not know where the notification had come from.
It is an administrative formality that does not require any justification, and we do not ask for one.
What the anti-doping rules require
The agency said the notification it received stated that Monfils had retired and was being removed from the anti-doping testing programme. To return to competition, a retired player must rejoin that programme for six months without playing. Polish reporting describes the same requirement as at least half a year of random testing before a player can be cleared to start again. Monfils had planned to close his career at the ATP 250 event in Lyon from 19 to 25 October, where he had received a wild card, and then at the Rolex Paris Masters from 2 to 8 November in his home city. The Paris Masters did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it would prepare a farewell ceremony for him.
The last match and an unfinished farewell
His last official match came at the US Open in early September, in the second round, where he lost to American Learner Tien 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Rai reports that he had beaten Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the first round. After that defeat he reportedly said he would play until the Paris Masters and then start a new career in finance. Earlier in 2026, at Roland-Garros in the spring, he had an evening dedicated to him, and a five-set loss to Hugo Gaston closed his last lap on the Paris clay, according to 20 Minutes.

A career ending as the last of his generation
Monfils won 13 ATP singles titles and reached 35 finals, according to Rai. He reached a career-high ranking of world No. 6 in November 2016, the same season he made the US Open semifinal, and he reached the French Open semifinal in 2008. Polish reporting describes him as the last of the four musketeers of French tennis in his generation, after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet retired. He is married to Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina. His last title came in Auckland at the start of 2025, when he was 38, and his on-court style of acrobatic retrieving and crowd-pleasing shot-making made him one of the most recognisable players of his era.
