Narrow lead for centre-left bloc
Preliminary results from Sweden's parliamentary election put the four-party centre-left opposition in position to form the next government. With 94% of voting districts counted following the Sunday ballot, the opposition bloc led by Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson held 176 seats in the 349-seat Riksdag, compared to 173 seats for Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's governing right-wing bloc. The two blocs were separated by roughly 29,000 votes, a margin of 0.45%. Voter turnout reached approximately 80%, a level considered low by Swedish standards. Election authorities noted that 353 voting districts, along with late advance ballots and postal votes from abroad, will be tabulated on Wednesday before certified totals are finalized on Thursday. Andersson addressed party members in Stockholm shortly after initial projections appeared.
If this result remains valid, Sweden will get a new government.
Decline for the Sweden Democrats
The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats suffered their first electoral decline since entering parliament in 2010. Led by Jimmie Åkesson, the party secured 17.6% of the vote, dropping 2.9 percentage points from its 20.5% result in 2022 and slipping from second to third place in the Riksdag. Projections indicated a loss of 11 parliamentary seats, removing the party's prospect of entering a governing cabinet with Kristersson's Moderates. Kristersson's Moderate Party retained second place with 19.9% of the vote. Mainstream parties across the political spectrum had previously adopted strict asylum rules, reducing arrivals to the point where Swedish ministry data recorded more departures than arrivals. Åkesson addressed supporters in Solna on Sunday night.
The more I think about this election campaign, the more I think that the real winners are us.
Internal divisions complicate coalition talks
Despite finishing first with 28.1% of the vote and 100 seats, the Social Democrats registered their lowest national vote share since 1908, down from 30.3% in 2022. Building a governing majority requires uniting four parties with divergent economic platforms. The Left Party advanced to 8.3% and 29 seats, while the Green Party took 6.1% and 22 seats, and the Centre Party captured 7.1%. While the Left Party demands cabinet seats and higher taxes on high earners, the Centre Party has refused to join an executive with the Left Party and rejects any wealth tax. Social Democratic party secretary Tobias Baudin confirmed initial exploratory messages with partner parties, stating on P1 radio that he remained confident an agreement could be achieved through compromise.
Government formation process
Swedish foreign policy regarding NATO membership and financial and military support for Ukraine remains unchanged regardless of the final coalition configuration. Andersson initiated Sweden's NATO application in 2022 before Kristersson completed the accession process during his term. However, domestic talks to appoint a prime minister may extend across months, according to former prime minister Carl Bildt. Kristersson did not concede defeat on election night, noting that 2022 exit polls had also shifted late in the count. Parliamentary Speaker Andreas Norlén will oversee formal party discussions once all ballots are counted.
It could very well be a complicated process to form a government.
